Hi Guys, Today I’m going to share my thoughts on the Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa* I was kindly gifted this system approximately 6 weeks ago.
I had first used an epilator close to 20 years ago, at the time it wasn’t for me, I became a waxer, I visited the salon every 4-6 weeks for me that was the quickest and easiest hair removal method.
After having my third baby 8 months ago, (yes, he is that old!!) I was finding it increasingly difficult to find time to go, in fact I had only had 2 waxes since he was came along.
So when the opportunity presented itself to trial the Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa I was pretty keen to give it a whirl, and see just how much things have changed over the years.
Below is the base device, there are 2 speed settings and a guide light which is really helpful for seeing the hairs while you are using the system.
The Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa is also a fully rechargeable system.
First up are the epilator attachments:
Attached to the Braun Silk-epil 9 is the actual epilator attachment, you then have 3 options before you start using.
The first (top) is the massage cap, which is the one I used the most, this is a great option when you are starting out epilating, or for more sensitive areas.
Once you have used the Silk-Epil 9 a few times and are more confident, you can move on to the middle cap which provides a closer skin contact and allows you to epilate quicker.
The last cap is for facial epilation, which I have not been able to put to the test as I fortunately do not have any facial hairs to remove at the moment.
You can use the Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa either in the shower or on dry skin.
I actually preferred to use this on dry skin, I find the first setting, works best for me, the second setting, even with the massaging cap, was just a bit too intense. I did use this in the shower on one occasion and I found that I was more likely to miss some bits and I went back over my legs anyway.
It is really hard to describe the sensation, it almost feels like little rubber bands flicking the skin, I didn’t find it hurt as such, however it does take a little getting used to.
First and foremost, when you are using this system for the first time, I would recommend that you get yourself comfortable and have some time to yourself, you don’t want to be rushing through it, you could also use the exfoliation head first (which I will look at shortly) first in preparation. Also if your hairs are a bit long, (longer than 5mm) you should give them a shave first and wait a day or two. Ideally it works best when hairs are between 0.5-5mm.
I got a good 2-3 weeks of smooth skin before I felt my leg hairs starting to peek through.
Apart from epilation you can also use the Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa for massage and exfoliation, the system comes with the massaging attachment, and two exfoliating attachments, the purple one being the sensitive head and the blue one a deep exfoliating head, these are really great added extras which help keep your skin smooth and also further minimise any ingrown hairs. All of these attachments work on the two speed settings depending on your personal preference.
The Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa also came with a facial cleansing device, this is battery operated (in which the batteries where included)
One of the things that I noticed with the skin cleansing brush is that the heads are a bit smaller compared to some of the other devices available, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as I did find that this was easier to get in around the nose for example. The brush heads are of varying softness, however all still felt quite gentle. There are also 2 speeds depending on your preference.
Overall I’ve been really pleased with the Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa and glad I have been able to try this system out.
For me the price ($299) would pay for it self within about 6 months, if you are a shaver it would take a bit longer, however I think reducing the amount of time you spend attending to hair removal is the real bonus.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
